Panchamrit Parpati: Classical Ayurvedic Medicine for Grahani, Chronic Diarrhea & Digestive Disorders

Panchamrit Parpati: Classical Ayurvedic Medicine for Grahani, Chronic Diarrhea & Digestive Disorders

Introduction

Panchamrit Parpati is a renowned classical Ayurvedic formulation described in authoritative texts such as Siddhayoga Sangraha. It is especially valued for its effectiveness in Grahani (IBS-like disorders), chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, anemia, and digestive weakness. Due to its multi-metallic composition and Parpati preparation method, it acts deeply on the digestive tract, liver, intestines, and respiratory system.

Classical Composition (Primary Formula)

The formulation consists of the following purified and incinerated ingredients:

  • Shuddha Parada (Purified Mercury) – 7 Tola

  • Lauha Bhasma (Iron Calx) – 7 Tola

  • Abhraka Bhasma (Mica Calx) – 7 Tola

  • Tamra Bhasma (Copper Calx) – 7 Tola

  • Shuddha Gandhaka (Purified Sulphur) – 4 Tola

Method of Preparation (As per Classical Text)

First, Kajjali is prepared by thoroughly triturating purified mercury and sulphur. After achieving a fine, homogeneous black mass, the remaining Bhasmas are added and mardan (triturated) continuously for one full day.
The mixture is then processed into Parpati form as described in Rasashastra texts.

Dosage & Anupana (Adjuvant)

  • Dose: 1 to 3 Ratti

  • Frequency: 2–3 times daily

Recommended Anupana:

  • Roasted cumin powder mixed with honey (licked)

  • Followed by:

    • Milk

    • Buttermilk (Takra)

    • Pomegranate juice or other mild fruit juices

Classical Reference (Siddhayoga Sangraha)

Acharya Yadavji Trikamji mentions that by adding Vanga Bhasma (Tin) and Yashada Bhasma (Zinc) to Panchamrit Parpati, Saptamrit Parpati can be prepared, which is even more potent.
In severe intestinal wasting (Antrakshaya), Saptamrit Parpati or Panchamrit Parpati combined with Swarna Parpati shows remarkable benefits.

Therapeutic Benefits & Indications

Panchamrit Parpati is considered one of the finest Parpati formulations in Ayurveda.

प्रमुख उपयोग (Key Uses)

  • Grahani (Malabsorption Syndrome)

  • Chronic & recurrent diarrhea

  • Aamatisara (Diarrhea with toxins)

  • Pandu (Anemia)

  • Aruchi (Loss of appetite)

  • Mandagni (Weak digestive fire)

Mode of Action (Ayurvedic Perspective)

Unlike other Parpatis that act on specific organs, Panchamrit Parpati works holistically on the entire digestive system.

  • Tamra Bhasma

    • Acts primarily on the liver

    • Enhances bile secretion

    • Clears pitta obstruction

  • Lauha Bhasma

    • Strengthens intestines

    • Improves absorption

    • Supports blood formation

  • Kajjali (Mercury–Sulphur complex)

    • Strengthens Grahani

    • Removes intestinal sluggishness

    • Acts as antimicrobial

  • Abhraka Bhasma

    • Beneficial in intestinal wasting

    • Strengthens lungs and respiratory channels

    • Neutralizes chronic toxins (Kshaya-related disorders)

This formulation gets absorbed at different levels—Pakvashaya, Grahani, Liver, Kidneys, ensuring deep systemic action.

Role in Pitta Disorders

Most Parpatis are ineffective in severe Pitta disorders, but Panchamrit Parpati is an exception due to the presence of Tamra Bhasma.

  • Regulates bile flow

  • Strengthens liver function

  • Reduces burning sensation and acidity

Because Tamra is intense by nature, it is safest and most effective when administered only through Parpati formulations.

Use in Chronic & Wasting Diarrhea

  • Highly beneficial in long-standing diarrhea associated with weakness and tissue depletion

  • Particularly effective where toxic residues (Kshaya Vish) are present

  • Can be administered safely with milk or buttermilk in full dosage

In severe chronic diarrhea:

  • Panchamrit Parpati is preferred over Swarna Parpati when fever or infection is present

  • Swarna Parpati is better when only strength loss is dominant without fever
