Parad Bhasma (Mercury Calx) in Ayurveda

Classical Preparation Methods, Dosage, and Traditional Uses

⚠️ Important Disclaimer
Parad Bhasma is a herbo-mineral Ayurvedic preparation made from purified mercury. It must only be prepared and prescribed by qualified Ayurvedic physicians. Self-preparation or self-medication is strictly unsafe.

What is Parad Bhasma?

Parad Bhasma is a classical Ayurvedic formulation prepared from purified mercury (Shuddha Parad) processed through specific purification (Shodhana) and incineration (Marana) procedures. In Ayurveda, properly prepared Parad Bhasma is described as:

  • Deeply rejuvenative (Rasayana)

  • Strength-enhancing

  • Digestive fire–stimulating (Agnideepaka)

  • Supportive in chronic and complex disorders

Ancient texts describe it as potent, fast-acting, and suitable in very small therapeutic doses.

Classical Preparation Methods

1️⃣ First Method (Traditional Yantra Process)

Ingredients include:

  • Purified Mercury (Shuddha Parad)

  • Rock Salt (Saindhava Lavana)

  • Tankana (Borax)

  • Vatsanabha (processed)

  • Asafoetida (Hing)

  • Alum (Phitkari)

  • Red Ochre (Geru)

  • Sea Salt

  • Indrayana root juice

Process Overview:

  1. All ingredients are powdered and mixed.

  2. Triturated (ground thoroughly) with sour gruel (Kanji).

  3. Further processed with juice of Indrayana root.

  4. Placed in a traditional heating apparatus (Damaru Yantra).

  5. Heated continuously for eight prahar (extended controlled heating).

  6. After natural cooling, the fine mercury calx (Bhasma) is collected.

This method produces a properly incinerated, fine, assimilable form of mercury.

2️⃣ Second Method (Kajjali-Based Process)

Ingredients:

  • Purified Mercury (4 tola)

  • Purified Sulphur (4 tola)

  • Banyan tree latex (Vat Ksheer)

Process:

  1. Mercury and sulphur are triturated to form Kajjali (fine black amalgam).

  2. Levigated with banyan latex.

  3. Heated slowly in an earthen vessel.

  4. Stirred continuously with a wet wooden stick.

  5. Cooked on mild heat for one full day.

Final Product Characteristics:

  • Black like collyrium (Anjana)

  • Smokeless

  • Light and fine

  • Properly processed for internal use (when physician-approved)

Classical Dosage

  • 7 Ratti to 2 Ratti (approximately 125 mg to 250 mg, depending on physician guidance)

  • Often administered inside a capsule or placed inside soaked raisins (Munakka)

⚠️ Always under medical supervision.
